On 6 May, BNL – BNP Paribas Group will be main sponsor of the 55th David di Donatello Awards, one of Italy’s most important film award ceremonies. The event, during which prizes are awarded annually to a range of categories in the film sector, is considered to be the equivalent of the Oscars in Italy.
The jury, led by Gian Luigi Rondi, is made up of winners from previous years, members of the executive council, prominent figures of the culture, arts and entertainment community, as well as personalities who represent wider Italian society.
As in previous years, BNL President Luigi Abete will appear at the ceremony to award the David Giovani prize, given to the film that receives the most votes from a jury of over six thousand Italian high school students.
The five candidates for the 2011 awards were announced at the press conference on 7 April. The shortlist confirmed the thriving state of Italian cinema and marked a return to comedy, a genre in which many top directors have established themselves in recent years, including Mario Monicelli, Vittorio De Sica, Dino Risi and Luigi Comencini. Two of the five candidates for best film are comedies: Benvenuti al Sud, by Luca Miniero, and Basilicata Coast to Coast, by Rocco Papaleo, who makes his feature film debut. The other three finalists are “La nostra vita” directed by Daniele Luchetti, Mario Martone’s “Noi Credevamo”, and “Una vita tranquilla” directed by Claudio Cupellini.
The bank’s sponsorship of the David di Donatello Awards is part of the campaign launched by BNL in support of Italian cinema. The campaign also includes the “Rome International Film Festival”, “Critics Week”, “Venice Days” and the Silver Ribbon event in Taormina.
